Blazers are City League Champions

Blazers
The 2011-2012 City League has come to a close with the Blazers taking home the championship! The Blazers and Atlantics had many hard fought battles throughout the year and the inside presence and ability to get after the ball on the boards made the world of difference as the Blazers strength and athletic ability stood on top of the league this year. New additions to the Blazers, Damian Gay and Mike Anderson helped the young squad pass the speedy All Stars and finally the veteran Atlantics.

On behalf of the league board and all of its players, congratulations!

Playoffs 2012

As we all know, playoffs are underway and the 2nd round will be played this upcoming Sunday. The final will be played Sunday, March 25th, 8:00pm at St. Macs. I will be away for the next week and a half and will most likely not be able to update the website. Please contact Lance Betts if you have any questions. I apologize for the inconvenience and I will be sure to update the scores as soon as I return.

Whomever wins the league championship this year please take a team photograph with the trophy so we can put it up on the website.

Enjoy the playoffs everyone!

Game of the week (Buzzer Beater)

The Blazers and Atlantics battled for the 2nd time this season, both proving to be great games. This past Sunday night the Blazers ended up on top defeating the Atlantics with a buzzer beating 3 point shot by former MillRat Mike Anderson. Everyone in the gym knew it was in as soon as it left his hand. The game was tight from start to finish with many lead changes throughout the game. Both teams had great contributions from their bench including great play from veteran Shaun Lingley of the Blazers and much needed rebounding from Atlantic forward Kurt Frank.

If these teams end up playing each other in the playoffs, it should be a treat.

Congratulations to Drew Stratton

On behalf of the Saint John City League we want to extend a huge congratulations to local pro basketball player, Drew Stratton, for signing with the Saint John MillRats. To keep up-to-date with the MillRats you can visit the MillRats website.

City League Championship 2010-2011

Atlantics 2010-2011 City League ChampionsThis year’s final game was a tough fought battle by the two best teams in the league, the #1 and #2 seeds. The Blazers and Atlantics played an intense game that didn’t go without some usual pushing and shoving. For the most part of the game the Atlantics held a 10 point lead and looked to their defense to keep it that way for most of the game. The Blazers out rebounded the veteran Atlantics handily and made the game interesting in the last 3 minutes as the Scott brothers knocked down a few clutch three pointers. Foul trouble kept the Blazers from taking the lead in the second half but they didn’t go down without a fight. The Atlantics shot the ball well from the free throw line and made key plays when they needed them most. An offensive rebound off of a free throw by Atlantics big man Alex Walsh sealed the game late for the Atlantics.

This is the Atlantics 3rd straight City League Championship. A special thank you goes out to all the team’s who participated in this years city league.

Playoffs Start This Weekend

The regular season is over and the playoffs are about to begin this weekend, March 20th. We will see the 1st seed play the 8th, 2nd and 7th, 3rd and 6th, and lastly the 4th and 5th. You can find the schedule in downloadable form on the sjcl.ca homepage or visit the scores page for match-ups and game times. The City League’s playoffs are always intense and the best two teams will battle it out at the end of a single elimination format. Every single possession counts as if it were your last and savvy veterans have often come out on top when it comes to City League championships. The Atlantics lead the way with 6 titles while the All Stars, Hoop Junkies, Alpines, and Mayans all have 2 a piece. Good luck to all the teams!

A reminder to players in the league that you must have played 5 regular season games to participate in the playoffs.

Game of the week – Feb 13th

There was another thriller that took place at St. Malachy’s High School this week in Saint John Men’s League action. The A’s and the All Stars battled to the bitter end as we saw the All Stars make a run in the last few minutes to force the game into overtime. Key shots from top scorers Scott Hachey and Dave LeBlanc led the way for the All Stars while leading scorer for the A’s Wes Levesque kept taking hard fouls down low to keep the A’s alive.

Down by 2 points with less than 12 seonds left, a hard back door cut by Scott Hachey took the A’s off guard on an inbounds play. The A’s put up a desperation shot that didn’t fall at the buzzer and the game went to OT. The All Stars kept a fresh rotation with their deep bench and their veterans sealed the game. A few of the All Stars viewed this game as one of the funnest they’ve played in years. This game also had high importance as it moved them ahead of the A’s into 4th place as they gain ground going into playoffs.

Atlantics Remain Undefeated

Atlantics Undeated in Saint John Mens League Play

The Atlantics defence has carried them to their 11th straight win this past Sunday night. Holding the All Stars to just 66 points, 20 of them coming from rookie Ryan Vaughan. The Atlantics interior defence, led by Alex Walsh, is well balanced and often times leads to fast break opportunities and an open look on the other end. The team is hitting full stride right now leading into Super Bowl Sunday where the entire league enjoys a by-week.

The Atlantics are full of veteran leadership coming from Steve LeBlanc, Kurt Frank, Greg Doyle and long time coach Butch Cogswell. They will be looking to make it three City League championships in a row this March. The Atlantics winning hasn’t stopped at the city level either, as they also captured the New Brunswick Men’s Provincial Championship in 2009.
